The line barbel ( Desmopuntius johorensis , syn .: Puntius johorensis , Puntius eugrammus and Barbus fasciatus , Bleeker, 1853) or striped barbel is a freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). Their distribution area extends from the Malay Peninsula via Singapore to Sumatra and Borneo . It was named after the Malay region of Johor .

features

The line barbel becomes 12 centimeters long. Their bodies are significantly more elongated than that of most other Desmopuntius species. It looks very similar to the smaller bearded barbel ( Striuntius lineatus ) , which occurs in the same area , but in contrast to this it has two pairs of relatively long barbels . Their basic color is light brown, on the sides of the body there are five to six longitudinal bands, of which the third from the top is the strongest. Young fish with a length of less than 3 cm, however, have four cross bars. Males stay slimmer than females.

Way of life

The line barbel is found in small forest rivers and streams and usually lives near the bottom of the water. It feeds on zooplankton , insect larvae , worms, crustaceans and plant matter.
