Desmopuntius is a genus of small Southeast Asian carp fish (Cyprinidae). The genus was established in November 2013 by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat for eight species of Southeast Asian barbels that were previouslyassigned tothe genus Puntius . The generic name Desmopuntius is made up of the Greek word for convict (δεσμὦτης ("desmotes")) and Puntius and refers to the stripes of the fish reminiscent of convictclothing.

features

Desmopuntius species differ from other Southeast Asian barbels , which were previously assigned to Puntius, in that they have 4 to 6 vertical, dark stripes (with three species only in juvenile fish). The first stripe lies above the eyes, the second behind the gill slits, the third at the beginning of the dorsal fin, the fourth at the beginning of the anal fin, the fifth on the center of the caudal peduncle, and the sixth at the base of the caudal fin. There is often a black spot at the front end of the dorsal fin. In Desmopuntius gemellus, D. johorensis and D. trifasciatus , the vertical bands are only present in juvenile fish and give way to a pattern with longitudinal stripes with increasing size.

The last unbranched dorsal fin ray is sawed behind. The sideline is complete and extends over 25 to 27 scales with pores. Between the lateral line scales and the base of the dorsal fin or the ventral midline, one counts 4½ rows of scales in front of the base of the pelvic fin . Twelve scales are counted around the tail stalk. Rostral and maxillary barbels are present. The lips are smooth and thin. On the first gill arch there are 7 to 11 gill rakes .

Desmopuntius differs from the genus Puntigrus by the more elongated body of reddish-brown basic color and black-brown horizontal stripes on the sides of the body and the complete sideline.

Desmopuntius species live in peaty swamps and in rivers and streams with an acidic pH .
