The pentazona barb ( desmopuntius pentazona Boulenger , 1894, syn. : Barbodes pentazona , Barbus pentazona , Capoeta pentazona , Puntius pentazona , systomus pentazona ) is a freshwater ornamental fish from the family of carp fish (Cyprinidae). It was first introduced to Germany in 1911 by the United Ornamental Fish Farms in Conradshöhe near Berlin.

features

Five-belted barbs reach a maximum size of 5 cm and are around three years old. The basic body color of the five-belted barbel is red-brown, on which five vertical black stripes or "belts" are applied. The males are more strongly colored and stay smaller than the females.

The fin formula is:

Occurrence

It prefers riparian zones with dense border planting as a habitat and is native to tropical Southeast Asia in Cambodia , Vietnam , Malaysia , Singapore , Sumatra and Kalimantan . There it lives in calm lowland waters and blackwater streams like the Sungai Kuning or Sungai Pakao on Sumatra. However, these natural biotopes dry out regularly, so that the fish are forced to move to other areas.

Aquaristics

The five-belted barb is a schooling fish and should therefore be kept at least ten and never alone in the aquarium . In the aquarium hobby it is only of minor importance, as its close relative, the tiger barb , is cared for much more often.

The five-belted barbel prefers the lower basin regions of the aquarium and often digs in the bottom looking for food.

Contrary to popular belief, five-belted barbs can also be kept together with angelfish , as five-belted barbs are calmer than most of their relatives. The tallest possible aquatic plants are needed for breeding , as the females lay their eggs in the upper areas.
