Puntigrus is a genus of small Southeast Asian carp fish (Cyprinidae). The genus was established in November 2013 by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat for five to six species of Southeast Asian barbels, which were previouslyassigned tothe genus Puntius . The generic name Puntigrus is made up of Puntius and "tigris" (for tiger ) and refers to the stripes of the fish.
features
Puntigrus species have a high-backed, rhombic body with a light, more or less yellowish base color and differ from other Southeast Asian barbels that were previously assigned to Puntius by their four black horizontal stripes on the body sides. The first stripe lies above the eyes, the second in front of the base of the pelvic fin, the third above the anal fin (it continues on the dorsal fin) and the fourth at the beginning of the caudal fin.
The last unbranched dorsal fin ray is sawed behind. The sideline is complete or incomplete. If present, it extends over 18 to 23 scales with pores. Between the lateral scales and the base of the dorsal fin, one counts 5½ rows of scales in front of the base of the pelvic fin, and 3 to 4½ rows of scales between the lateral scales and the ventral midline. There are 12 to 14 scales around the tail stalk. Rostral barbels are absent, maxillary barbels are present. The lips are smooth and thin. There are 8 to 9 gill rakes on the first gill arch .
