Puntigrus tetrazona ( Syn .: Puntius tetrazona , Systomus tetrazona ( Gr .: "Tetra" = four)) is a freshwater fish from the family of carp fish (Cyprinidae). Their distribution area is on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and in western Borneo in the rivers Kapuas , Mahakam and Bulungan .

According to Baensch and Riehl , the species is identical to the tiger barb , a fish that is very well known from the aquarium hobby. However, Zarske showed that there are clear morphological differences between the two species.

features

Puntigrus tetrazona becomes about six centimeters long. Their body is high back and corresponds to that of most other girdled barbels. Shape and color, with the conspicuous, dark four broad horizontal stripes with a yellowish base color, black anal and red ventral fins , largely correspond to that of the tiger barb. In contrast to this, however , Puntigrus tetrazona has four barbels (none of the tiger barb), a complete lateral line with 19 to 23 scales (incomplete tiger barb) and its caudal fin stalk is surrounded by 14 scales. The last unbranched dorsal fin ray is ossified.
