According to Baensch and Riehl , the species is identical to the tiger barb , a fish that is very well known from the aquarium hobby. Zarske showed, however, that there are clear morphological differences between the two species.

features

The Borneo barbe becomes 6.6 inches long. Their body is high back and corresponds to that of most other girdled barbels. Shape and color, with the conspicuous, dark four broad horizontal stripes with a yellowish base color, black anal and red ventral fins , largely correspond to that of the tiger barb. In contrast to this, however, the Bornean barb has four barbels (Sumatran barb none), a complete sideline with 19 to 23 scales (Sumatran barb incomplete) and its caudal fin stalk is surrounded by 14 scales (Sumatran barb 12). The last unbranched dorsal fin ray is ossified.
