Agave nizandensis is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name are "Nizanda" and "Dwarf Mexican Agave".

description

Agave nizandensis grows solitary or forms small groups with a height of up to 30 cm and a diameter of up to 40 cm. The linear to lancet-shaped, brittle, flexible, variably arranged, green, striped leaves are 20 to 30 cm long and 1.5 to 2.5 cm wide. The leaf margins are irregularly serrated. The conical reddish end spine is up to 0.8 cm long.

The spike-shaped inflorescence is 1 to 2 m high. The light yellow to green flowers are 35 to 40 mm long and appear in short-stalked clusters of two to five flowers on the upper part of the inflorescence. The short funnel tube is 3 to 4 mm long.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

Systematics and distribution

Agave nizandensis grows endemically in Mexico in the state of Oaxaca on stony slopes.

The first description by Ladislaus Cutak was published in 1951.

Agave nizandensis is a representative of the Nizandensae section . It is endangered, extremely rare, and only a few small colonies grow in a geographically isolated area in and around Nizanda . The species has no close relatives within the agave group. Ullrich therefore set up the Nizandensae section for them.
