Puntigrus pulcher ( Syn .: Systomus pulcher ) ( Latin : "pulcher" = beautiful) is a freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). It occurs only in the eastern part of the Indonesian island of Kalimantan in the Kayan and Mahakam rivers. The species was described in 1922 by the Swedish zoologist and artist Hialmar Rendahl as Puntius pulcher , but later synonymous with Puntius anchisporus from the same distribution area. In 2011, the species wasrevalidatedby the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat and his Singaporean colleague Tan Heok Hui and classified in the genus Systomus . In 2013, Kottelat assigned them to the genus Puntigrus , which he has re-established for the Southeast Asian "tiger barbs".

features

According to Kottelat and Tan, Puntigrus pulcher differs from Puntigrus anchisporus by its incomplete lateral line with ten to eleven accompanying scales (complete with P. anchisporus ), by 19 to 21 (+2) scales in a central longitudinal row (21 to 23 (+2) in P. anchisporus ), 12 scales around the caudal fin stalk (14 in P. anchisporus ), a completely black dorsal fin (outer edges red, rear corner gray, rest black in P. anchisporus ) and completely black pelvic fins (red in P. anchisporus ) .

This means that Puntigrus pulcher has a superficial resemblance to the Puntigrus tetrazona that occurs on Sumatra and western Borneo , but differs from it in the narrower black transverse bands, which in Puntigrus pulcher are only 1.5 scales wide on the middle of the body, while those of Puntigrus tetrazona have a width of 2.5 scales. The dorsal fin, which is transparent on the outer edge of Puntigrus tetrazona, and the pelvic fins that are transparent on the base of the fin and on the outer edge, can also be used to differentiate.
