Linnea (also Linnéa, Linea, Linnaea, short form: Nea ) is a female given name of Swedish origin, which is mainly common in Sweden, Finland and Norway.

Moss bell (Linnaea borealis L.)

Origin and meaning

There are two derivations of the first name Linnea (stress on the penultimate syllable), which refer directly or indirectly to the Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné .

  • According to the common derivation, the first name goes back to the botanical generic name of the Nordic moss bell . The moss bell (Linnaea borealis L.) is said to have been the favorite flower of Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778), who called himself Carl von Linné since he was raised to the nobility in 1756 . Linnaeus's patron Jan Frederik Gronovius gave the genus the name Linnaea in 1737.
  • In honor of Linnaeus, Swedish boys were named Linnaeus after Linnaeus' original family name. The feminine form of the given name Linnaea or Linnea was formed from this by moving .

Both derivations are likely, but not supported by literary sources.

On the origin of the family name Linnaeus: Linné's father was the first to adopt a family name in addition to the patronymic of his gender. He named the family after a huge linden tree (Swedish lind ) that stood on his father's farm.

Sweden. The first name came into use in Sweden at the earliest during Linnaeus (1707–1778) lifetime. The first name was known in Sweden at least since the 1840s. Apparently, Linnea was such a common first name in the 1860s that it even gave its name to a children's magazine. While the first name was not among the 10 most popular female first names in Sweden from 1920 until the end of the century, it made it into the top ranks since around 2000. This applies to the annual new births and the total proportion of the female population.

From Sweden, the first name spread to Finland and Norway. In other European countries, the first name seems to be uncommon or rare. This also applies to Austria and Switzerland. In Germany, the first name Linnea became common in the 1980s and is one of the rare first names.

Finland. In Finland around 400 women had the name Linnea / Linnéa until 1899. By the end of 2011 there were and are almost 33,000 women with the name Linnea / Linnéa and around 6,500 with the name Nea in Finland. The first name Linnea / Linnéa has never been one of the 10 most popular female first names since 1900.

Norway. The first name Linnea has been known in Norway since 1900. Up until 2000, the proportion of the female population was just over 0%, increased to 1.6% in 2006 and has since declined again. In 2011, Linnea / Linea ranked 5th in the statistics of the most popular female first names.
