Linwood Barclay (* 1955 in Connecticut ) is a Canadian - American author , journalist and former columnist.

Life

Barclay's parents settled near Toronto in the late 1950s . His father, Everett Barclay, was a draftsman and painter who worked for the auto industry and its advertising in magazines such as Life , Look and the Saturday Evening Post . In the 1960s, automobile advertising was increasingly dominated by photography and so his father changed his saddle. The family settled on the Kawartha Lakes northwest of Toronto in the province of Ontario . There the family had acquired a holiday village with huts and parking spaces for caravans. When Barclay was 16, his father died and Linwood became the family breadwinner. He wrote the experiences from this time in his report Last Resort A Memoir .

At 22, Barclay left the holiday village for Peterborough, northeast of Toronto, where he studied English literature at Trent University and found his first job with a newspaper, the Peterborough Examiner . At Trent University he met the Canadian author Margaret Laurence , who worked there as writer-in-residence , and had the American author of mystery novels Ross Macdonald as a mentor. In 1981 he moved to Canada's largest daily newspaper, the Toronto Star , where he held various editorial positions until 1993. From 1993 onwards he became known for his humorous columns and commentaries with the Toronto Star. In 2008 he left the newspaper in order to devote himself entirely to his literary work.

Barclay met his wife at Trent University. The couple have two grown children and live in Burlington, southwest of Toronto.
