Lionel Rogozin

Lionel Rogosin (born January 22, 1924 in New York City , New York , † December 8, 2000 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Rogozin was the only son of Israel Rogozin , who was one of the most important entrepreneur-philanthropists in the textile industry . He attended Yale University and received a chemical engineering degree to work in his father's business. He served in the United States Navy during World War II . After his return he traveled through war-ravaged Eastern and Western Europe and Israel, as well as a trip to Africa in 1948. He then worked in his father's company until 1954, during which time he taught himself how to operate a 16mm Bolex camera . His first documentary On the Bowery won several awards such as the BAFTA Film Award and the 1958 Oscar for Best Documentary .
