Adaeze Obiagu wants to take responsibility for her father Ernest Obiagu's transportation company after his father's health deteriorates. However, he appoints his brother Godswill as his temporary substitute. Since the company is in financial problems, both Godswill and Adaeze try different means to get the company out of the crisis. The company wants to land a government contract and has to compete with Igwe Pascal's company.

Lionheart is the directorial debut of Genevieve Nnaji , who previously worked primarily as a film actress in Nigeria. The film was bought by streaming service Netflix shortly before its premiere and is the first Netflix original film to come from the African continent. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has since been available on Netflix in 190 countries.

On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film has a 100% promotion based on 7 reviews. Oliver Armknecht from film-rezensions.de praises the film for its feminist approach, but otherwise describes it as "hardly worth mentioning" and gives it 5 out of 10 stars. The New York Times’s Ben Kenigsberg’s review is more positive, describing the making of the film as global and reassuringly familiar.
