Liorhyssus hyalinus is a bug from the family of glass wing bugs (Rhopalidae).

features

The bugs are 5.9 to 7.1 millimeters long. They have a yellow-brown to red basic color and are similar to members of the genera Rhopalus and Stictopleurus . The species can be distinguished from these by the very long membranes of the hemielytres , which clearly extend over the body at the back. The top of the abdomen is mostly dark, and on the pronotum there are usually two dark spots near the back corners.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed worldwide in the tropics and subtropics and has penetrated in Europe via the Mediterranean area on both sides of the Alps to Western and Central Europe. In Germany it has become increasingly common and occurs particularly in the south, but also occasionally in the north as far as the north German lowlands. In Austria it is particularly widespread in the east, but you can find it everywhere in the valleys. The species is about to expand its distribution. Historically, she was only known as a rare stray visitor in Great Britain, but has been more common since the 1990s and now apparently down-to-earth in some places, such as the coast in south Wales . Dry and warm areas with heavy vegetation of herbaceous plants are settled, such as fallow fields and ruderal areas as well as the edges of fields and roads. They are often found on sandy soils.

Way of life

The animals feed polyphagous , but mainly on daisy family (Asteraceae), such as lettuce ( Lactuca ), goose thistle ( Sonchus ), dog chamomile ( Anthemis ), scrub thistle ( Cirsium ) and others. In the tropics and subtropics, the species is considered a pest in agriculture. In Central Europe the winter imagines , but have probably not diapause . As a result, they can train one or more generations per year, depending on the conditions they encounter.
