features

The flies have a hunchbacked appearance. They are pale yellow in color, with darker, brownish pigmented tergites . Their legs are long and have strong bristles. The compound eyes are clearly separated by the forehead in both sexes. They are undivided, evenly faceted, pigmented in black and have microscopic hairiness. The animals have three point eyes ( ocelli ). The antennae have 15 segments and are light, finely haired and occasionally with dark bristles. The second antenna segment is pear-shaped to heart-shaped. The long wings are transparent and iridescent. They lack the discoid cell. A fine network of veins is formed on them, the anal lobes are strongly developed, the holders are long-stalked.

The larvae are yellowish on top and whitish yellow on the underside and have fully grown claw- and tarsen-shaped appendages on the first to sixth segment. They are 7.5 to 9.5 millimeters long and 2.1 and 2.3 millimeters wide. The antennae are long and slender. The first, rounded body section, which consists of the head and the first body segment, is about half as long as the antennae. There are eye spots. On both sides of the body in front of the second to sixth suction cup there are a total of seven gill tubes.

Way of life and distribution

The animals are widespread in Europe. The larvae develop in streams in low mountain ranges.
