Lipoxygenases
Lipoxygenases are enzymes that oxidize polyunsaturated fatty acids with two oxygen atoms to form eicosanoids . They therefore belong to the group of dioxygenases . Several lipoxygenases play a role in, among other arachidonic acid - metabolism of mammals and plant linoleic acid metabolism. The enzymes usually each have up to three iron ions in their active center as a cofactor . In the mushroom kingdom , lipoxygenases have also been described which have manganese in the catalytic center instead of iron. An example of such a lipoxygenase is the Mn-LOX from Gaeumannomyces graminis.

- Mammalian arachidonate-5-lipoxygenase ( EC 1.13.11.34 )
- Mammalian arachidonate-12-lipoxygenase ( EC 1.13.11.31 )
- Arachidonate-15-lipoxygenase of mammals ( EC 1.13.11.33 , inter alia in reticulocytes) and of Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- the bifunctional allene oxide synthase / archidonate-8-lipoxygenase of the coral Plexaura ( EC 1.13.11.40 )
- linoleate-11-lipoxygenase in plants and the fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis ( EC 1.13.11.45 )
