A new taxonomic group, the ovalentaria, is proposed for the cichlids, surf perches, damselfish and some other taxa related to them , the relationship of which is based primarily on molecular biological studies and is only supported by morphological features on the eggs of the animals.

In addition, the parrotfish and odacids, which were previously placed in the rank of independent families, belong phylogenetically to the wrasse, so that they remain as the only family of labroids.
