Lisa Eva Nandy MP (* 9. August 1979 in Manchester ) is a British politician of the Labor Party and Member of the House of Commons . She has represented the constituency of Wigan there since the British general election in 2010 .

biography

Nandy was born in Manchester and grew up both there and in Bury (Greater Manchester) . On her father's side, she is of Indian descent . She studied political science at Newcastle University and at Birkbeck, University of London . She then worked for The Children's Society , an organization that campaigns for children's rights. Between 2006 and 2010 she worked as a local politician in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham .

In February 2010 she was a candidate for the Labor Party in Wigan . She won the election with 48.5% of the vote. Nandy was the first female MP in her constituency. In the British general election in 2015 , she was able to improve her election result to 52.2%. In the 2017 British general election , she received 62.2% of the vote in her constituency. In the 2019 general election , however, Nandy lost 15.5 percentage points and only got 46.7% of the vote. Nevertheless, she was able to defend her mandate.

It has been speculated several times that Nandy might run for the Labor Party chairmanship, replacing Jeremy Corbyn . The birth of their son is believed to be one of the main reasons for their decision not to do so. You support Corbyn's challenger Owen Smith . She advocates same-sex marriage and voted on October 22, 2019 as one of 19 members of the Labor Party for Boris Johnson's European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill. This decision caused violent displeasure in social networks and Nandy was sometimes insulted for it.
