Peterhead Old Parish Church

The Peterhead Old Parish Church is a former parish church of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Peterhead in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

With St Peter's Church , Peterhead had a medieval parish church until the 18th century . In 1771 a new church was completed, leaving the old church abandoned. Eight years later, this building was classified as unsafe. After it did not offer enough space for the growing community in 1795, it was decided to build a larger church building. The church, built in 1771, has meanwhile been largely demolished.

Today's Peterhead Old Parish Church was built between 1804 and 1806 to a design by Edinburgh- based architect Alexander Laing . The building was redesigned in 1894 and 1966. In May 2016, the parish of Peterhead Parish Church merged with the neighboring parish, whose church was henceforth used as a parish church.

description

The Peterhead Old Parish Church is located at the junction of Maiden Street and Erroll Street near Peterhead Bay . The elongated granite building is designed in a strictly classical style. The arched entrance portal on the west side closes with a triangular gable . Arched windows are embedded along the side facades. A 36-meter-high bell tower rises above the entrance portal, which merges harmoniously into the building structure via a stone balustrade . The U-shaped gallery inside rests on Doric columns.
