François du Plessis de Richelieu

François du Plessis, Seigneur de Richelieu (* 1548 , Richelieu ; † June 10, 1590 Gonesse ) was a French military, diplomat, and senior officer of the crown . He is the father of Cardinal Richelieu

Life

François du Plessis comes from an old Poitou family . He is the younger son of the officer Louis du Plessis de Richelieu and Françoise de Rochechouart. When his older brother Louis II du Plessis de Richelieu was killed by Seigneur de Mausson in a neighborhood dispute, François killed the perpetrator in return. François was under the pages of Kings Francis II and Charles IX. behaved. In 1569 he fought in the battle of Moncontour .

He played a key role in the Estates- General of 1588-89 ( États de Blois ), and although he was an avid Catholic, he remained King Henry III. loyal to the fight against the Catholic League and then joined Henry IV . He later fought on the side of the king in the Battle of Arques (1589) and the Battle of Ivry (1590). As a reward for his services, he received a gratuity of 20,000 écu from Henry IV and was appointed captain of the 3rd company of the Garde du corps du roi .

He was adviser to the king in the Conseils du Roi (Conseil d'État and Conseil privé) and lieutenant in the orderly company of the Prince de Dombes .

He died of an inflammatory fever on June 10, 1590 at the age of 42.
