List of Fiji's Foreign Ministers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Fiji's Foreign Ministers includes the individuals who have held the foreign affairs portfolio since Fiji's independence on October 10, 1970.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs (commonly known as the Foreign Minister ) is a Fijian Cabinet Minister responsible for international relations and diplomacy and oversees the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Especially since Fiji's relations with other countries were severely damaged after the two military coups in 1987 and Fiji's international reputation had suffered greatly, and two further coups in 2000 and 2006 respectively , the position of Foreign Minister became particularly important, especially vis-à-vis the Pacific Islands Forum , the Pacific Community , the Alliance of Small Island States, and the United Nations .

Like other ministers, the Foreign Minister is officially appointed by the President after being nominated by the Prime Minister. He is responsible to both the Prime Minister and the Parliament of Fiji . The position can be held independently in conjunction with other ministerial responsibilities. From time to time the prime minister also served as foreign minister.

According to the 2013 constitution , the foreign minister, like all other ministers, must be a member of parliament .

For the period as a British crown colony from October 10, 1874 to independence on October 10, 1970, Fiji had no foreign minister; Great Britain regulated foreign relations.
