List of Chiefs of Engineers in the U.S. Army
The Chief of Engineers is the commanding officer of all units in the United States Army Corps of Engineers . The position is based on the General Staff of the Pentagon . The Chief of Engineers advises the United States Army on all engineering issues and exercises control over the surveying activities, construction programs and similar duties of the Corps of Engineers.
As head of a main command in the US Army, the Chief of Engineers currently has the regular rank of Lieutenant General and his regular term of office is four years. He is under the civil control of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) and is appointed by the President after prior consultation and with the approval of the Senate .
Historically, the post of Chief Engineer already existed under changing names during the times of the Continental Army .
