Akhenaten's tomb

The rock tombs of Amarna are located in the eastern mountains of Akhenaten's newly founded, former capital Akhet-Aton in Middle Egypt . The necropolis with the so-called "graves of the nobles" (private graves) is divided into the following areas: the north and south cemetery. In between is the "Königstal" with the royal grave and four additional graves. A total of 30 graves were found. The acronym for the graves is AT and stands for Amarna Tomb , such as KV for King's Valley ( Valley of the Kings ) or TT for Theban Tomb ( Theban grave ).

The graves were examined from 1903 to 1907 by Norman de Garis Davies and documented in drawings. He published his drawings in the six-volume work The Rock tombs of El Amarna for the Egypt Exploration Society (EES), at the time the Egypt Exploration Fund (EEF). A new edition of the editions took place in 2004 in three volumes, each with a foreword by Barry Kemp , who has been carrying out excavations in Tell el-Amarna since 1980.
