São Tomé and Príncipe are the two eponymous and by far the largest islands in the state and, besides the island of Rolas, are the only ones that are permanently inhabited. The two main islands make up 99% of the land mass of approximately 1001 km² of the state. Rolas, the third largest island, only reaches 3 km².
