List of members of the National Academy of Sciences / 1863

On March 3, 1863, signed Abraham Lincoln after the decision of the Senate and House of Representatives, the founding charter of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, making 50 people the first members of the Academy were (charter members) .

One intended member did not accept the appointment, three members resigned later (see notes).

  2. John Dahlgren resigned in May 1863.
  3. Asa Gray resigned in January 1867.
  4. Benjamin Pierce resigned in 1877.
