Joseph Winlock
Joseph Winlock (born February 6, 1826 in Shelby County (Kentucky) , † June 11, 1875 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) ) was an American astronomer and mathematician .
Life
Winlock was director of the “Nautical Almanac Office” from 1858 to 1859 and from 1861 to 1866 and thus editor in charge of the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac and from 1859 head of the “Department of Mathematics” at the “US Naval Academy”. He succeeded George Phillips Bond as director of the Harvard College Observatory in 1866 . He held this post and his professorship for astronomy until his death. He observed galaxies and nebulae with a 15-inch Merz refractor installed in 1847 .
Winlock was born with Isabell Lane married. From the marriage came the eldest daughter Anne, who was respected for her arithmetic skills as a "human computer" in Harward; the Egyptologist Herbert E. Winlock was descended from another daughter .
In 1853, Winlock was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1863 he was a founding member of the National Academy of Sciences .

Two observations from 1867 are documented, which can be clearly attributed to Winlock with an NGC number :
During his time as director, his assistants are credited with another eleven discoveries.
