Georg II. Rizkallah (also: George II Rizqallah Beseb'ely , Jirjis al-Basba'li , Beseb'ely , Arabic جرجس الثاني رزق الله البسبعلي, Latin Georgius Sebelensis , * 1595 in Beseb'el, Lebanon ; † April 12, 1670 , Keserwan , Lebanon) was the 56th Maronite Patriarch of Antioch from 1657 until his death in 1670.

Life

George Beseb'ely was probably born in 1595 in the village of Beseb'el, near Tripoli . He was the son of Hadj Rizqallah. The place name also became part of his name. On July 25, 1656, he was ordained an auxiliary bishop by Patriarch John Bawab Safrawy .

After the death of Patriarch John Bawab on December 23, 1656, the bishops elected the monk George Habquq as patriarch, but he refused out of modesty and fled to a cave in Wadi Qadischa to live there as a hermit . Therefore a second election became necessary, which took place on January 1, 1657. In this election, George Beseb'ely, who had meanwhile become archbishop, was elected patriarch. He sent his references to Rome for confirmation from the Pope , but for reasons unknown the Holy See delayed the matter until the Patriarch had to renew his petitions for accession. His election was therefore not confirmed by Pope Alexander VII until May 26, 1659 and he received the pallium on August 30, 1660.

Like his predecessors, George Beseb'ely lived in a monastery according to the strict monastic rules. During his tenure, he maintained good relations with the Kingdom of France after France had appointed a noble Maronite, Abu Nawfal from the Khazen family, as consul in Beirut for the first time in 1662 . This strengthened friendship and France became a protective power for the Maronites.

George Beseb'ely died on April 12, 1670 of an epidemic that broke out in the Mar Challita monastery in Keserwan.
