Government House (St. Lucia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Government House is the official residence of the Governor General of St. Lucia , the island nation of the Caribbean . The Government House stands on the heights of Morne Fortune near Castries .

The first Government House to be built on this site was destroyed by a hurricane in 1817 before construction was completed. A second wooden building was constructed and completed in 1819. This building fell into disrepair and was abandoned in 1865. The Government House was then moved to an unused barracks .

The construction of today's brick building in place of the former began in 1894 and was completed a year later. Originally it served as the residence and official residence of the Commissioners of Saint Lucia until 1958, then for the administrators. Since 1967 the Government House has been used as the seat of the "Governor of Saint Lucia" and since independence in 1979 as the seat of the Governors-General .

On the occasion of the UN climate conference in Paris in 2015 , the government of St. Lucia announced that it would install a solar system on the building in partnership with the non-profit organization Solar Head of State in order to set an example for the importance of renewable energies.
