Rodney Bay is a bay and a place in the Quarter Gros Islet on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia . The bay also gives its name to Rodney Bay Marina , a canal and harbor system in the center of Gros Islet / Rodney Bay.

Rodney Bay is primarily the name of the bay in the northwest of the island, between Mount Pimard and Pigeon Island . The bay itself is horseshoe shaped. Reduit Beach is the most popular beach on the island.

The bay also gives its name to a residential area of Gros Islet , which lies south of the town center directly on the coast. The settlement is located on a peninsula that is connected to the land to the south and is only separated from the main town Gros Islet and the district Edge Water by a narrow canal . The Rodney Bay Marina extends to the east and the Reduit settlement connects to the south. At the northwest tip of the peninsula is the Splash Island Water Park and from there luxury hotels stretch south along the beach. Rodney Bay Marina extends from the canal to the north like antlers along a semicircle to the south. Several small streams form the ends of this bay. The marina is the second largest yachting center in the Caribbean , after the Yacht Haven Grande in Saint Thomas . The marina was created in 1985 and in 207 IGY Marinas bought it. The marina has 221 anchorages and 32 mega yacht docks. There is an annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers in December that attracts approximately 270 boats and 1200 visitors.

Temperatures are high all year round, the coolest month being January and the warmest being August. The greatest amounts of precipitation are from May to December. December is the wettest and April the driest month.

history

The bay was named after Admiral George Brydges Rodney , who had a fort built as a base on Pigeon Island. Pigeon Island is now a National Landmark. In 1972 the island was connected to the mainland. When the English expelled the French from the island in 1778, Rodney also expelled all the indigenous people ( Arawak ) and felled the trees on Pigeon Island so that he could spy on the French naval base in Martinique from there . From there he was able to defeat the French at the Battle of Les Saintes in 1782. The ruins of Fort Rodney still stand today .

Rodney Bay is a popular tourist destination. This is where the island's entertainment and recreation center is located. Dozens of hotels and apartments, as well as the two largest shopping centers on the island and the Treasure Bay Casino are located here. There are also a number of restaurants and cafes. On Reduit Beach Ave there are some night clubs and various spas and therapeutic offers such as yoga , reflexology , and Ayurvedic massages are offered. In Iceland Mix Art Emporium there is a gallery; the Union Nature Trail and Zoo shows native animals and offers a circular route through the rainforest.
