Ramsar sites are closed after the 1971 Ramsar Convention protected areas for wetlands of international importance, according to the intention of the international international treaty in particular as a habitat for water and wading birds .

Antigua and Barbuda put the agreement into effect on October 2, 2005. So far (2014) only one area has been designated according to the Ramsar Agreement, with around 36 km², which covers almost 8% of the country's area.
