Important Bird Areas  (IBA) have been identified by BirdLife International as particularly valuable habitats for birds. They do not represent a protection category with legal consequences in the actual sense, but indicate a need for protection. Another award is the Endemic Bird Areas  (EBA) for endemic animal species .

In Antigua and Barbuda there are 12 Important Bird Areas, with almost 200 km², which cover about  15 of the land area. In addition, the whole country belongs to a large endemic bird area, one of six in the Caribbean, which is considered a biodiversity hotspot.

Antigua and Barbuda signed the Cartagena Convention (1983/1986), which obliges the signatory states to protect marine ecosystems, and in 1990 the UNEP's SPAW protocol (Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife in the Wider Caribbean Region) , in which the Cooperation with BirdLife is also required. Around 23 of the designated IBA area is now under national protection, albeit with very different degrees of severity.
