The Parish of Saint George , also St. Georges Parish , usually short St. George is a Parish of the Caribbean island state Antigua and Barbuda .

geography

The Parish covers the east of the northern part of the island of Antigua , it extends about 9 km north-south along the North Sound into the interior of the Central Plains , and about 3 km west-east from the suburbs of Saint John’s to the coast. At 24 km² it is the smallest of the island's parishes, and has just under 120 of the land area of the state and 111 of the island of Antigua.

The population is a little under 8,000, that is 111 of the state residents and almost 18 of those Antiguas, of which 7,500 are locals (population, 95%). The Parish has around 2,700 households, the average size is a 3-person household (2011: 2.9), which is the national average (3.0). The population density of around 330 people per km² is very high compared to the national average (around 150) as well as for the main island Antigua (just under 250), the second highest after the Parish of St. John's.

The Parish has no actual main town or regional center, the more important places are Piggotts as the largest town and transport hub, as well as Coolidge with its port and airport.

history

The parishes are the highest administrative units of the monarchy, they represent the historical parish districts that are widespread in the Anglo-Saxon area as a rural administrative division . The main church of this parish was today's church of St. George's Rectory in Fitches Creek . Originally the island only had five parishes, St. George's became independent from St. Philip’s (near Parham ) in 1725 .

Historically, the region was part of the New North Sound Division . The western parts were in 1873 and administratively to the Parish of Saint Peter summarized (Parish Boundaries Act) .

The area was farmland, initially tobacco and then sugar cane plantations. Around 1850, shortly after the abolition of slavery, the Parish included the property ( Estates ) Mount Lucie, Donovan, North Sound, Carlisle, Millar, Barnacle Point, Fitches Creek, Weir, High Point, Date Hill, Giles Blizards, Judge Blizards, Gravenors , Nibbs, Winthorpes, Paynters, Gunthorps - the farms existed as localities until the 1950s, sometimes until today, otherwise they became the core of a settlement - as well as the places Winthorpes Village (abandoned), Barnes Hill , Saint Marks (after the local Anglican Church), Osborns Farm and Sea View Farm (two properties).

Urbanization did not begin until after the Second World War, when the Coolidge Air Force Base (now VC Bird Airport , 1941/42) was built and the sugar industry collapsed - first the private plantations closed, followed by the state-owned Antigua Sugar Factory in 1972 . Today the central area of the Parish already belongs to the suburban area of the capital St. John's, the north is an industrial area (airport area, Texaco docks ) and the location of the US military base Camp Blizzard, including two universities. The population growth was 23.2% from 2001 to 2011, well above the national average (15.6%).
