The Christian Cove is a bay on the south coast of the Caribbean island of Antigua .

Location and landscape

The Christian Cove ( English cove , 'small bay') is an inner side bay of Willoughby Bay , one of the large bays on the island. It is near Bethesda and Christian Hill . The approximately 700 meters wide and 500 meters deep into the land, up to about 5 meters (3  fathoms ) deep, lagoon-like sea area is surrounded by wetlands.

Nature and conservation

The mangrove swamps of Christian Cove are among the largest remaining populations on the island. There is also a natural freshwater pond in the wetland, which is fed by what is now the overflow of Bethesda Dam .

A population of the Kuba Whistling-duck (West Indian Whistling-duck, Dendrocygna arborea ), an endangered bird species, and a larger population of the Aztec Gull (Laughing Gulls Larus atricilla ) are native here. Therefore, in 2007 BirdLife International described an Important Bird Area  (AG011) with 95 hectares, according to the criteria A1 (threatened species) and A4i (at least 1% of the total population). A national protection status is pending, the biotope is considered to be highly threatened, as tourism development projects are repeatedly discussed.
