Herbert Zimmermann (chemist)

Herbert Zimmermann (born March 7, 1928 in Leipzig ; † January 22, 2016 ) was a German chemist and university professor.

Life

Zimmermann studied chemistry at the Technical University of Munich and graduated in 1956 with a thesis in physical chemistry with Günter Scheibe . In 1958 he also received his doctorate from the TH Munich with a dissertation on the structure and properties of the associates of 45-methyl-imidazole . The dissertation was supervised by Nobel Prize winner Richard Kuhn at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg. In 1962, Zimmermann completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Munich with a paper on the formation of hydrogen bonds in imidazole .

In 1963 he was appointed associate professor for theoretical organic chemistry at the University of Munich . In 1967 he was appointed full professor of physical chemistry at the University of Freiburg as the successor to Reinhard Mecke . Zimmermann's main research interests were intermolecular forces and quantum chemistry . After Zimmermann's appointment, the University of Freiburg was one of the first universities to give lectures on quantum chemistry on a regular basis.

After the dissolution of the old science and mathematics faculty of the university, Zimmermann became the first dean of the newly formed faculty for chemistry. In addition, he was an expert reviewer for the German Research Foundation for many years . In 1993 Herbert Zimmermann retired. Gerd Kothe was appointed his successor .
