- Werner I. (1170–1215), Count of Battenberg and Wittgenstein
- Werner II. († 1272), inherited from his father, but joined the Order of St. John in 1221 or 1230/31 at the latest.
- Widekind I. , followed his brother Werner II. As Count of Battenberg and Wittgenstein.
- Siegfried I (1238–1277), son of Widekind I, Count zu Wittgenstein, inherited the Wittgenstein sub-county soon after 1238 as a result of an inheritance and founded the Wittgenstein House. The county of Wittgenstein emerged as an independent rule with its centers Laasphe and Berleburg .
