Life

Werner II von Battenberg was the eldest of four sons of Count Werner I von Battenberg and Wittgenstein . It is documented for the first time in 1215. After the death of his father in 1215, he first took over the affairs of state in the county of Battenberg . He let his brothers Widekind I and Hermann I participate at least partially in the rule.

Werner planned to retire from the office for a long time. He then possibly already entered in 1221, but no later than 1230/31 in the either already by his father after his participation in the crusade of Henry VI. (1197/98) or Johanniterhaus Wiesenfeld , which he donated himself, southwest of Frankenberg , and then called himself in documents "Brother Werner, Johannisspitaler, before Count von Battenberg". So he is z. B. in the agreement of December 15, 1237 of Archbishop Siegfried III. of Mainz with the brothers Konrad II. and Wittekind von Merenberg as a witness in which the archbishop bought the county of Ruchesloh from the Merenbergers. The county of Battenberg fell to his brother Widekind I. Werner himself became commander in the Johanniterhaus Wiesenfeld in 1238 at the latest .

Werner fought in vain with the Ludowinger Landgraves about the hospital of Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia, who died in 1231, in Marburg. He was well acquainted with Elisabeth and was one of her supporters in Marburg. This house fell to the branch of the Teutonic Order in Marburg in 1234 . Subsequently, he used his spiritual position variously for the purposes of his family and in particular contributed to the equipment of the monasteries close to his house. For example, in 1248 he made sure that goods were sold to the Georgenberg monastery near Frankenberg. In the same year he decided a tithe dispute in favor of the Haina monastery . Werner is documented for the last time in 1255.
