From 1861 honorary consulate general, from 1910 conversion of the honorary consulate general into an embassy, from 1918 independent embassy, since 1957 embassy. In 1957 the legation was upgraded to an embassy.
Between 1918 and 1941 the head of mission was also accredited in Portugal and has been accredited in Andorra since 1996.
