In 1919 Switzerland opened a consulate in Tehran , which in 1936 was upgraded to an embassy.

The nationalization of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company , decided by Iran in 1951 , led to a conflict with the Commonwealth of Nations . From 1952 until Operation Ajax in 1953, Switzerland was the protective power of Australia and Canada in Iran .

From 1954 to 2001 the respective ambassador in Tehran was also accredited to the respective government of Afghanistan. Even after the occupation of Afghanistan by the Red Army , the Swiss government maintained its relationship with the government of Babrak Karmal in Kabul .

Since May 21, 1980, after the hostage-taking of Tehran , the embassy has housed the Foreign Interests Section , in which America is doing good offices for the United States. This office was headed by Wilhelm Schmid until 1982, Ernst Iten from 1982 to 1985 and Marco Kämpf until February 2009.

On September 17, 1981, an explosion damaged the embassy entrance door and windows. A group that describes itself as Armenian claimed to have been the originator of the attack, in which no one was injured.
