Alfred Martin Escher (born March 23, 1906 in Zurich ; † February 14, 1980 in Zollikon ; resident in Zurich) was a Swiss diplomat .

Career

Alfred Martin Escher vom Glas was a son of Carola geb. Prince and Carl Escher vom Glas, the President of the Cantonal Court. He studied law in Zurich, Kiel, Berlin and The Hague. In 1929 he received his doctorate in Zurich. He then worked as a lawyer in an insurance company.

From June 5, 1935 to December 31, 1935 he was administrator of the Swiss consulate in Bangkok . From 1936 to 1938 he was legation secretary at the Swiss embassy in Warsaw . From 1939 to 1942 he was legation secretary at the Swiss legation in Berlin . Between February 6, 1942 and May 22, 1944 he was consul at the Swiss consulate in Baghdad .

From June 16, 1944 to 1945 he was administrator at the Swiss embassy in Athens, which was occupied by the Wehrmacht . He coordinated the transfer of occupation from the Wehrmacht to the Anglo-American troops in Greece, which prevented ELAS from taking over power . From 1946 to 1947 he was Legation Counselor at the Swiss Embassy in London . From November 30, 1948 to September 1, 1950 he was a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross . In 1949 he married the English actress Mary Martlew Greenhalgh.

From 1951 to 1954 he was the Swiss envoy in Tehran . From 1954 to 1955 he headed the Swiss delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (Korea) . From April 24, 1955 to 1957 he was envoy to Rome . From April 12, 1957 to May 2, 1959 he was ambassador to Rome. Between February 20, 1959 and March 21, 1964 he was ambassador in Bonn . From March 22, 1964 to February 29, 1972 he was ambassador to Vienna . From October 1972 to November 1972 he was special envoy at UN headquarters . With effect from March 1, 1972, he was retired.
