Alfredo Mengotti (born January 8, 1866 in Bologna , Kingdom of Italy , † March 29, 1925 in Madrid ) was a Swiss diplomat . From 1918 until his death in 1925 he was the Swiss envoy to the Kingdom of Spain .

Life

His family is originally from Poschiavo GR . The trained engineer pursued a commercial activity in Spain , mainly as a representative of various Swiss trading houses. Mengotti replaced the late Honorary Consul General Charles Lardet in 1904 and remained in Madrid as Honorary Consul General of Switzerland until 1910. With the transformation of the Honorary Consulate General to the embassy in 1910, the Federal Mengotti appointed Consul General and Charge d'Affaires of the newly established embassy in Madrid. With that, Mengotti definitely entered the diplomatic service.

Mengotti often complained that his official diplomatic position in Spain was inadequate and that he could hardly get access to the relevant authorities. The Federal Council responded on April 21, 1914 by appointing Mengotti as Minister-Resident . On February 20, 1918, the Federal Councilor awarded Mengotti the title of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. Thus he was the first Swiss envoy to the Kingdom of Spain.

Mengotti kept the post in Madrid until his death on March 29, 1925. The Federal Council appointed the professional diplomat Maxime de Stoutz as his successor . Mengotti, the so-called self-made man , never lived on Swiss soil.

Mengotti's marriage to Matilde Arnaiz Quirós resulted in nine children (Alfredo, Enrique, Paco, Adolfo , Arturo, Matilde, Teresa, Carlos and Leonor).
