Each member state sends a judge to the European Court of Justice ( ECJ ), the judicial body of the European Union (Art. 19 (2) EU in conjunction with Art. 253 TFEU). The European Court of Justice is assisted by eleven Advocates General (Art. 252 (2) TFEU). The judges and advocates- general of the Court of Justice are to be selected from persons who offer every guarantee of independence and who meet the requirements for the highest judicial offices in their state or who are lawyers of recognized excellent qualifications; they are appointed by the governments of the member states by mutual agreement for a period of six years (Art. 253 TFEU). Since the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty , a selection committee has previously given an opinion on the suitability of applicants (Art. 255 TFEU).
