List of electric locomotives of the PRR

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list provides an overview of the electric locomotives used by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) .

Electric route network of the PRR

The railway operated 1,085 km of electrified lines, which consisted of the connections New York City - Washington, DC (part of the Northeast Corridor ) and Philadelphia - Harrisburg . In 1962, 267 electric locomotives and 500 electric multiple units ran on 2307 miles (3712 km) of tracks spanned by catenary.

The first electrically operated route was the Manhattan Transfer - New York Pennsylvania Station - Sunnyside Yard connection, which opened in 1910 . It was operated with 650 V direct voltage from a power rail painted from above . The same system was used by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), which was operated by the PRR until 1966.

1915 was electrified lines-25 kV Hz with a 11 AC - catenary spans. In 1933, the PRR's 650 V direct voltage operation was converted to overhead lines.

Originally intended as a universal locomotive for passenger and freight trains with direct or alternating current. The poor driving characteristics of the single-frame locomotive meant that only direct current locomotives were built in series, but these were not able to replace the DD1 .
