Hikaru Utada

The list of top-selling music albums in Japan includes music albums that have been recognized by the Recording Industry Association of Japan for over three million units sold since 1942 . The albums are listed according to the sales that Oricon announces each month. Hikaru Utada's studio album First Love is the most commercially successful music album in Japan with sales of 7.6 million.

Explanation of the data

Japan is the second largest music market in the world according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry . The Japanese music market is based on around three quarters of physical sales as Oricon only uses physical sales for the charts. All albums that have sold over three million times and have been awarded at least three diamond records are listed.

Limits to the award of phonograms

The RIAJ has been giving awards for albums and singles since January 21, 1989.
