The club creates the framework for recreational sports without competitions and tournaments, but with a lot of sporting vigor. Health promotion and socializing therefore play an important role in many departments.

history

On August 9, 1865, the men's gymnastics club was founded in Ratingen, which 23 citizens joined on the evening of its establishment. The initiator was the teacher Karl Lipp, who was also elected chairman. The Strucksberg restaurant was also the club's first gym.

In 1880 the gymnasts united in a new gymnastics club in Ratingen. The chairman of this association was Gustav Esser, to whom the re-establishment should be mainly owed. § 1 names the purpose of the association as “the most complete possible training and strengthening of the body through gymnastics exercises”.

In 1905, the Ratingen gymnastics club, which at that time was still founded in 1880, celebrated its 25th anniversary and also joined the German gymnastics association, which at the time had 7,296 clubs with 768,000 members.

In 1908 the association had more than 100 members for the first time. Due to the steadily growing number of members, a sports field was created in 1912 and a municipal gymnasium was built in 1913.

On January 11, 1914, the assembly decided unanimously to no longer name the club Turnverein 1880, but Turnverein Ratingen 1865. In 1918 a women's team was founded. After just a few weeks it had 28 members.

After the end of the Second World War, the Ratingen gymnastics club received the “Permit” in October 1945 for the resumption of practice operations and the right to assemble. Many members had fallen in the field and the club was on a fresh start. A new board and a new gymnastics council were elected. The aim and task of the young board of directors should be to revive the association in its old form. Three years later the number of members was already back to 220 members.

The first club newspaper appears in March 1955. The former club members who emigrated to America also received the newspaper, which kept them informed about what was happening in the club.

In 1957, the Turnverein Ratingen had more than 500 members for the first time. A year earlier, an admission ban had to be issued due to a lack of trainers.

On August 29, 1959, the first club's own hall was inaugurated as a gymnastics home with a usable area of 24 × 12 meters, with equipment and youth room, two changing rooms and two bathrooms as well as toilet facilities by the deputy chairman of the German Gymnastics Federation, Karl Gerhardts , in a ceremony . This milestone for the Ratingen gymnastics club was congratulated by the then Federal Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Schröder . During this time, there were table tennis, judo, fistball, gymnastics, handball, everyone's gymnastics, athletics, hiking and children's and youth gymnastics departments.

The goal set for the anniversary year 1965 of having a membership of over 1,000 was achieved in June 1964. At the extraordinary general meeting on July 11th, the club's chairman, Hans Danscher, presented the 1000th member. In the anniversary year of 1965 there will be exactly 1097 members.

Thereafter there is a steady increase in the number of members. The volleyball department was founded in 1971, the swimming department in 1973 and the aikido and basketball department in 1978. In October 1979 the first full-time employee of the Turnverein Ratingen 1865 eV is hired and a new era begins. The large number of members makes a purely voluntary organization no longer possible.

In 1980 the number of members rose to over 2,400. The first cardiac sports group was founded in 1981, the new sport of aerobics was introduced in 1983, the barbecue area, which is still popular today, was built in 1984, Taekwondo expanded the range of sports in 1985 and the badminton department was opened in 1986.

On January 31, 1987, TV Ratingen received the sports badge from the Federal President as an award for the association's achievements for society.

In 1988 TV Ratingen opened the first club studio in North Rhine-Westphalia. The State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia chose the studio as a model project in North Rhine-Westphalia. The people from Ratingen have pioneered recreational and health sports in the state, because the studio in turn binds new target groups to the club. To be able to train when you want, according to health-oriented standards, with the support of qualified sports teachers, that was really innovative. Otherwise, at the end of the 80s, studios were often still the well-known "Muckibuden" in the commercial sector. As early as 1990 the studio was being used to its limits and capacity was exhausted. In 1993 the new, second studio was built in Ratingen Mitte.

In 1991 the field hockey and ice hockey departments are founded. Both are very popular.

In 1994 TV Ratingen built the sports center Mitte, a multifunctional new building. The slightly larger studio and the long-awaited sauna for members are on the ground floor. The club's own movement kindergarten "Springmäuse" is opened on the first floor and a spacious gymnastics room offers space for new fitness offers. The second floor is equipped with a training room for 30 participants. In addition, TV Ratingen is building a 90 square meter caretaker's apartment and two apartments with a bathroom. These will later be converted into offices for the full-time sports teachers.

In 1995 the youth committee of TV Ratingen was formed. There are now 2000 young people between the ages of 0 and 27. The youth committee represents the interests of the young people in the association and also has its own budget.

In the same year the first decathlon takes place as a country decathlon between Germany and the USA in Ratingen. This resulted in today's annual all-around meeting that TV Ratingen organizes for the organizer, the German Athletics Association.

In 1996 TV Ratingen founded the baseball department, which was closed again in 1999 due to low demand.

The aerobics department starts a record attempt for the Guinness Book of Records on June 21, 1997. 728 participants set a record in 12 hours of continuous aerobics at the TVR festival .

In 1999, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the fitness studio, the President of the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia, Richard Winkels, presented the TV as the first association ever to receive the State Sports Association's certificate “Recognized Fitness Studio”.

The success of the fitness studio in Ratingen Mitte ultimately leads to the opening of another studio in Ratingen Ost on April 29, 2004. It was already clear at the beginning of 2000 that a new studio would be needed, as all capacities in the Mitte studio were exhausted. The new building of Studio Ost is around 1300 square meters and reflects the orientation of the association in its modern architecture.

In summer 2005 TV Ratingen became a training company. A trainee is employed in the field of “sports and fitness clerk”. Students for the dual study of fitness economics also do their operational part of their training at the club.

In 2009 the club again reached its capacity limits with over 5000 members. The board of directors decides to convert and completely refurbish the sanitary rooms and the office. There are new changing rooms on the ground floor, a new heating system and the hot water supply is also solar powered. This also advances TV Ratingen when it comes to sustainability.

Since January 1st, 2010 the former Ratinger Fecht-Club is a division of TV Ratingen. The department is very successful in competitive sports. In 2012/2013 the 1st team in North Rhine-Westphalia wins silver at the German Championships. In 2014/2015 the fencers won four gold medals at the Rhineland State Championships. With the 8th place of the women's team at the European Cup in November 2014 in Eislingen, the Ratingen fencing children show that the TV Ratingen now houses one of the most successful fencing departments in Germany, which works without a main sponsor and support center.

The trend towards group fitness triggers a rush of members. In the following year, the Sports Center East is therefore expanded to include a 100 square meter training area on the first floor.

organization

Like many large associations in Germany, TV Ratingen is organized with a presidium , a board of directors and an administrative apparatus. More than 10 full-time employees and more than 200 trainers work in the association. The Presidium and many other helpers volunteer .

In addition, there is the youth committee, which represents the interests of young people in the association through voluntary work.
