history
With the Treaty of Waitangi , New Zealand became a British colony in 1840 and the British monarch became head of state. The status of the country changed to Dominion in 1907 , but the British monarch remained the head of state. Since 1917 the Governor General of New Zealand has represented the monarch within New Zealand. With the signing of the Statute of Westminster in 1947, New Zealand gained independence. The New Zealand Monarch has since been in personal union of the British.
