List of Scythian rulers and kings
The rule of the Scythians was apparently usually inherited from father to youngest son ( ultimogenitur ). The following list is incomplete, especially in the early days war leaders may have been confused with kings in the written sources:
- Founding hero Targitaos , son of Zeus and a river goddess (mythical)
- Lipoxais , Arpoxais , and Kolaxes , sons of Leipoxais, ancestors of the various Scythian sub-tribes (mythical).
- Išpakai in the reign of Assurhaddon (680–669)
- Bartatua , perhaps Ishpakai's successor, in the reign of Assurhaddon
- around 616 Madyes , son of Partatua
- around 514 Idanthyrsos
- Ariantas , attempted an arrowhead census .
- Saulios , 6th century
- Ariapeithes
- Skyles (before 424), son of Ariapeithes and a Greek woman from Istros . Deposed because he had violated traditional customs, Sitalkes fled to the Thracian king .
- Oktamasades , brother of Skyles
- Atheas (? -339)
- Agaros , ally of Satyros from the Bosporan Empire.
- Kanita , 3rd century
- Saitaphernes from the tribe of the Sai , turn 3./2. Century
- Skiluros , second half of the 2nd century, founded Neapolis
- Palakos , end of the 2nd century
- Pharnakes II
- Saumakos , a former slave of the Pairisades , ruler of the Bosporan Empire .
