List of ship robberies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1992 , the Piracy Reporting Center of the International Maritime Bureau was established in Kuala Lumpur . It collects reports of piracy and evaluates them. It also helps in finding stolen ships.

According to the IMB, at least 30 people were killed in pirate attacks in 2004 - nine more than in the previous year. In 2003 the number of fatalities from pirate attacks more than doubled compared to the previous year. At the same time, the IMB registered a decrease in the number of registered attacks from 445 to 329 in 2004. According to reports, the focal point of piracy is the waters of Indonesia , where 93 attacks were reported in 2004. The Strait of Malacca between the island of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula ranks second with 37 raids.

In 2005 a total of 274 attacks were reported. 440 crew members were kidnapped, mostly to extort ransom. Although the sea around Indonesia remained the center of piracy, the situation off the Somali coast has deteriorated particularly due to, among other things, sharply increased ransom demands.
