The New Zealand team to explore the Blue Glacier during the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958) named it based on the name of Mount Lister. Its namesake is Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister (1827–1912), President of the Royal Society from 1895 to 1900.
