The Meißen Literature Festival is the largest open-air reading festival in Germany, with around 200 free readings a year. It has been held annually since 2009 at the beginning of June under the patronage of Federal Minister Thomas de Maizière and in cooperation with the Reading Foundation . While around 8,500 visitors attended the festival in the first year, the number of visitors grew to around 17,000 by 2012.

Events

Almost all of the readings take place in the alleys and in the squares of the historic old town of Meißen and in the Albrechtsburg . Almost all those involved in the Meißen Literature Festival are volunteers. Active participants so far have included the patron Thomas de Maizíère, the former editor-in-chief of the Sächsische Zeitung Hans Eggert , the entertainment artist Dorit Gäbler , the bestselling authors Iny Lorentz , Sabine Ebert , Tanja Kinkel , Titus Müller and Olaf Kraemer as well as Grimme Prize winners Christian Jeltsch .

As part of the Meißen Literature Festival in 2012, a poetry slam - a competition in which self-written literature is presented - and the writing competition “LITERATURwerke Meißen” for children and young people were announced for the first time , in which a total of 218 competition entries were evaluated by the jury.

The fifth literary festival planned for the beginning of June 2013 had to be canceled due to the flooding of the Elbe. However, some smaller events took place on their own initiative.
