The literary museum "Theodor Storm" in Heilbad Heiligenstadt was opened on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Theodor Storm's death in 1988 and deals with the poet's work in the district town of Eichsfeld between 1856 and 1864.

Mainz House

The literature museum is located in the Mainz house built in 1436. The first documentary mention of the property was in 1367. Archbishop Dietrich Schenk von Erbach issued the building contract for the house in 1434 together with a fief to the citizen Wyland, who undertook to take it up when the archbishop visited. Conversely, the house was exempt from tax, i.e. privileged as a so-called free house . The motifs on the east facade on the first floor go back to the bishop's preferences: they show him as a friend of the hunt (hare, deer, heart), as a wine lover (vines, grapes) or refer to his official position (consecration cross). The detached house was one of the few private houses to survive the city fire of 1739 and is one of the oldest buildings in Heiligenstadt. As an archbishop's house built in the Franconian half-timbered style for Mainz officials, it is one of the most important architectural monuments in Eichsfeld . Storm himself did not live in the house during his time in Heiligenstadt, but passed through on the way from his apartment at Wilhelmstrasse 73 to the court. The bronze sculpture by Werner Löwe in front of the main entrance is a reminder of this .

history

Fairy tale room in the literature museum "Theodor Storm", Heilbad Heiligenstadt

The museum opened on July 4th, 1988, and the Storm statue by the sculptor Werner Löwe in front of the museum was unveiled. Werner Henning , who later became the district administrator of the district of Heiligenstadt and the district of Eichsfeld , played a key role in the renovation of the building and the construction of the museum . Michael Böhm was appointed the first director of the Literature Museum. In 1992 the 1st Storm Days took place in Heiligenstadt under the direction of Antonia Günther. The annual scientific “Storm-Blätter from Heiligenstadt” appeared for the first time in 1995. The museum's collection includes almost all literature by and about Theodor Storm. A second focus of the collection is on illustrations and free artistic work on Storm's life and work, from contemporaries like Ludwig Pietsch to the present day, such as a Storm portrait by Wolfgang Peuker . The collection was expanded in 1998 by the estate of the Heiligenstadt puppeteer Ignaz Tschich (1879–1963). The Heinrich-Heine-Zimmer was set up in 2000 and the permanent exhibition “Theodor Storm in Heiligenstadt”, designed by Regina Fasold, director from 2003 to 2018, opened in 2005. On the initiative of Karl-Heinz Wittkowski and the Lions Club , the small city garden belonging to the Mainz house was transformed into a rose garden with historical plants in 2006. The Theodor Storm Association took over the museum from the city of Heiligenstadt in 2008. The collection was expanded in 2017 with donations from Storm's descendants. Gideon Haut has been director of the museum since 2018. In April 2020, a virtual tour of the museum was created for digital viewing.

Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition of the museum, "Theodor Strom in Heiligenstadt", introduces the world and the artistic work of Storm during the 7½-year stay in Eichsfeld. In seven rooms, the exhibition consists of installations and documentation, which is divided into six subject areas: "Homeland that has become a stranger", "Home in a stranger", "The poet in the Heiligenstadt era", "The novelist in the Heiligenstadt era", “Theodor Storm's Christmas” and “The fairy tale collector and fairy tale poet”.

The Heinrich Heine room, which was set up in 2000, commemorates Heinrich Heine's Evangelical Lutheran baptism on June 26, 1825 in Heiligenstadt.

rose Garden

In 2002 the Lions Club first expressed the idea of converting the museum garden, which was designed in 1988, into a rose garden. A redesign was necessary due to the signs of wear and tear on the pavilion and pergola. The idea of a rose garden was readily accepted, as Theodor Storm himself was a rose lover. “It's rose time again,” was a standing phrase at Storm. The Lions Club took over the financing of the project and Ingomar Lang, the long-time director of the Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen, took over the management. The redesign work began in spring 2006: the earth was replaced, new trellis installed and a new pavilion set up with a view of St. Martin's Church . When choosing the roses, great importance was attached to historical plants, as they could have bloomed in Storm's Heiligenstadt time. Most of the roses came from a nursery in Bad Langensalza. The official opening of the garden took place in July 2006. The rose garden was completed in November 2006. The 350 square meter garden has since then comprised over 380 plants and 247 different types of roses.
