Little Marlow is a village in Buckinghamshire in England . It is on the River Thames , about a mile northeast of Marlow and about 50 km west of London . Little Marlow has 130 residents (2001).

history

The first written mention (as Merelafan ) comes from the year 1015 . The name is of Anglo-Saxon origin and in its original meaning denotes a piece of land that was created by draining a body of water.

Little Marlow was shaped in its early days by the local monastery, the remaining buildings of which are still located in various parts of the village.

Attractions

One of the local attractions is the 14th century church of St John the Baptist which can be seen in the opening credits (01:28) of the film The Wax Bouquet . Another sight is the ruins of the Benedictine abbey from the 13th century. The abbey was abolished in 1547 and destroyed around 1740.

The Marlow Suspension Bridge , a suspension bridge from the years 1829–1832, is also worth seeing . It has a wingspan of 235 feet (about 71.6 m). The writer Edgar Wallace is buried in Little Marlow's cemetery.

The place has a train station and bus routes to Henley-on-Thames , High Wycombe (line 400) and Reading . The M40 motorway is approximately 5 miles from Little Marlow.

Town twinning

The twin town of Little Marlows is the French Marly-le-Roi .
